by Anne Fothergill
Based on the novel ‘Memoirs of a Nazareth House Girl’
January 1951, two-year-old Anne Traynor’s world is about to change forever when her mother walks out on her family. She leaves behind her husband, Raphy, son Denis and daughters Elizabeth and Anne. Ten days later Elizabeth and Anne are taken to a convent in Middlesbrough run by the poor sisters of Nazareth.
Nazareth House, where the rules are strict and there is the ever-present threat from the bullies, the nuns and, according to them, even from God. Friendships are formed and there is camaraderie among the girls – and rules are there to be broken. A humorous and illuminating account of Anne’s thirteen years spent in care.
A workshop production of this brand-new play created by Anne Fothergill based on a series of experiences in Nazareth House. Full of warmth, comedy and shared memories.
Middlesbrough Theatre 12th – 14th September 2018.
